Al Wasl and Al Ain fight for ‘Winter Champion’ tag as AGL reaches halfway point

Leaders Al Wasl host draw specialists Shabab Al Ahli

Matchweek 11 of the Arabian Gulf League will be played on Thursday and Friday with five important games to conclude the first round, after the match between Al Wahda and Al Jazira was delayed due to the latter’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup this week. Matchweek 11 will see Al Wasl and Al Ain fight for the ‘Winter Champion’ tag at the top of the table and will also see the relegation battle get more intense.

Ajman and Hatta open the matchweek at the Rashid bin Saeed Stadium at 16:45 on Thursday. Both sides earned a point last week against strong opposition, 2-2 draws against Al Wahda and Al Wasl respectively. Visiting Hatta are looking to get back to winning ways, while Ajman want to continue their rise from ninth place.

At 19:30 , Al Nasr meet Emirates at the Dubai Club Stadium in Al Awir. The hosts have a good chance to bounce back from their 1-2 defeat away at Al Ain, and move into the top four. Emirates, meanwhile, are hopeful of starting a good run after defeating Dibba 1-0 in the previous matchweek.

Friday’s action starts with Dibba and Sharjah at the Fujairah Stadium at 16:40 as both teams look for a win after losing in the previous matchweek. The hosts are in seventh place with ten points, and Sharjah in eighth place with nine.

Al Ain travel to Al Dhafra’s Hamdan bin Zayed Stadium at 16:50 where only a win can move them past Al Wasl at the top should the Cheetahs slip. Al Wasl currently sit ahead of their chasers on head-to-head away goals. Al Dhafra, meanwhile, sit in 11th place with eight points, ahead of last place Emirates by a single point.
