Poor Gylfi Sigurdsson stood no chance.
On Friday night Nigeria beat Iceland 2-0 in Volgograd thanks to Ahmad Musa’s second-half double. The Europeans, however, did have a chance to make a game of it when they were awarded an 83rd minute penalty.
A goal would have put Iceland right back in the match and perhaps would have sown seeds of doubt in Nigerian minds.
The African nation’s supporters, however, had other ideas.
As Sigurdsson waited to take his penalty, Nigerian fans around the world broke into the same chant.
“Over the bar, over the bar.”
In the stadium, at home, in fan parks, bars and schools, the shouts grew louder as the Everton midfielder approached the spot…. and skied his penalty over the bar.
If the Super Eagles do progress to the knock-out stages of the World Cup, we doubt any other team would fancy taking them on. Certainly not if it goes to penalties.
Here are the Nigeria fans putting the jinx on Sigurdsson and Iceland…
