Al Wahda continued their impressive start to the season with a 3-0 home win over Al Wasl at Zayed Sport City Stadium in matchweek 2 of the Arabian Gulf Cup Group A.
The game started off in electrifying fashion, as Sebastian Tagliabue sent Leonardo de Souza behind Al Wasl’s backline with an accurate through ball. The Brazilian dribbled cleverly past goalkeeper Yousef Al Zaabi and tapped the ball calmly into the empty net just five minutes into the match.
Tagliabue nearly doubled the Clarets’ lead in the 27th minute, as Tareq Ahmed’s in-swinging cross from the left flank found the Argentine inside the box, but his powerful header was brilliantly saved by Al Zaabi.
Youngster Yahya Al Ghassani extended Al Wahda’s lead in the 40th minute, scoring on his full debut as he converted a loose ball into the bottom corner from a close range, after Souza’s initial freekick got deflected off the wall.
Souza continued his impressive performance, when he made it 3-0 for the Clarets less than four minutes later, evading his marker and finishing with composure from inside the box.
Early in the second half, the Cheetahs’ tried to push forward in order to reduce the deficit, however, Rashed Ali saved Ronaldo Mendes’ low powerful strike in the 61st minute, the most notable of the second half, to keep the score 3-0 at the final whistle.
Following the win, Al Wahda top Group A table with the full mark from two games. Meanwhile Al Wasl occupy the group’s fifth spot with one point.
