An equaliser 12 minutes from time by Tsukasa Shiotani kept alive Al Ain’s hopes of progressing from the group stages of the AFC Champions League after a 1-1 draw against Esteghlal in Tehran.
Al Ain have now drawn all four of their matches and are in third place in Group D, two points behind Esteghlal and Al Rayyan, who are both on six points.
The Emirati club had fallen behind to a Mame Thiam penalty at the end of the first half, but a excellent passing move was crowned with a fine curling finish by Shiotani, and despite failing to win, Al Ain will see this as a point gained.
Al Ain next match in the competition will be against bottom of the group Al Hilal on April 2, and defeat will almost certainly spell elimination for either club.
